The Final Piece Maggi Myers Lori Sabin 9781480055544 Books

Overall, I give this book 2.5 stars.

What I liked:

I really liked the writing style of Maggi Myers. It is what kept me engaged for the most part, especially for the few times when things rang so false it took me out of the story.

It's nice that Beth's family clearly love her and want to protect her and see her happy, even her parents eventually.

It's nice to think about epic love stories actually existing, even if they don't make the most sense in the context of this novel.

What I didn't like:

The law bungling with Drew and Tommy. It took me right out of the book because it's not something any semi-competent D.A. will write off on.

Beth's handling the abuse. At some points, it seemed realistic, but more often it didn't ring true at all.

Sacrificing a good character to get the pining lovers back together. The way in which he was offed was at least somewhat realistic, especially because it was out of nowhere. However, it was ultimately done to lead other characters back to each other so I was a little annoyed.

What I'm confused about:

A lot of the book, it feels like the audience is being told rather than shown. As a result, the story and the characters feels more shallow than they should.

The timeline! I can never quite figure out when things are happening. The time skips just made it a lot harder for me to figure it out. While I don't mind time skips in general (I actually like non-linear time lines), this wasn't really well done. Markers of time didn't seem to match up to gadgets or names, which lead me to confusion.

To sum up, I liked reading the book despite the problems I had with it. When a new book of hers comes out, I definitely won't avoid it.

NOTE: There are graphic sexual acts in this novel, including child molestation scenes. If this is something that is going to disturb you, you might want to skip this book.

The Final Piece Maggi Myers Lori Sabin 9781480055544 Books Reviews

I wanted to love The Final Piece and it had the makings of a moving and powerful story but I do think it fell short. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the story but I didn’t love it the way I should have. I think anytime anyone chooses to write a story about abuse/rape it has to be done with depth and it should rock me to my core; this wasn’t the case. The subject matter felt one-dimensional and glossed over.

There were moments throughout the story when I felt Beth bounced back too quickly from something horrific that happened during her childhood. No one goes through life recovering from abuse/rape that easily. There were one or two scenes that were difficult to read and not because it was graphic but because it was jarring; it was out-of-place making the story seem choppy.

Even though I had some concerns with the story there were elements that I liked. Tommy (besides Ryan) is one of my favorite characters. He was an extremely well thought-out character filled with depth. He’s the father figure every daughter wants and he gives her the love and protection that Beth desperately needs. To say that he made me feel warm and fuzzy is an understatement!

Beth’s relationship with Ryan tugged at my heartstrings. The way their relationship blossoms from when they’re children into adulthood is incredibly touching. Even after being apart for a few years they can’t seem to forget about each other and one can only dream of a love such as theirs.

The writing is excellent (regardless if I was able to truly connect to the story) and while the pace of the story isn’t quick it was perfect for the subject matter at hand.

My final two cents Even though I struggled with the story, I didn’t dislike it but I really wanted to love it a lot and I do look forward to reading more books by Maggi Myers in the future. ;)
The thing that I liked most about this book was also the thing that I felt took away from it- the story line being staggered across many years. I always want to know what happens in the future of the main character; most story lines I read span a year at most, or more likely just a few months, and I'm always dying to know what happens in the years to come for the characters (all the best characters are real people in my mind, obviously!). With The Final Piece, you get that, as the story starts with Beth in elementary school and ends with her well beyond university. I enjoyed this as you get to know more of her life, but when I finished the book I didn't get that feeling of longing for more and the bit of sadness at it all ending. This confused me as while reading it I really thought I liked it. Then I realized that it was because the story line felt SO rushed. Granted I did read it within a day, so that may have been some of my own doing, but it was largely in part due to the story line taking part over so many years. While I absolutely adored Beth's family, more than in any other story, it all felt underdeveloped. I'd definitely say go ahead and read this- there are amazing characters- but for me it was not a story I thought much about once I finished it.
If you enjoy literary fiction, this is not the book for you. It deals with really serious subject matter in a very light, fluffy, YA romance novel type of way. Beth is sexually abused for most of her childhood, then one day a boy tells her to trust him under a cherry tree and she is fine. She and the boy have a 25-minute romance and then are ripped apart to spend the next ten years pining over each other. When a tragedy brings them back together as adults, they are more concerned with reigniting their one-day teen love affair than recovering from the tragedy.

I just found the relationship between Ryan and Beth totally unbelievable. It's actually pathetic how scarred for life they are by their one day together as teenagers. And it treats sexual abuse so lightly, as if it's nothing that a little star-crossed romance can't fix. I will give the book two stars for starting out strong and keeping me reading (it's a very fast read) but the characters are poorly developed and the romance was about as ridiculous and unimaginative as anything I've ever read. I can only hope that the author was 17 or younger when she wrote it, because it reads like a little girl's fantasy.
Overall, I give this book 2.5 stars.
