Lou Lou and Pea and the Mural Mystery Jill Diamond Lesley Vamos 9780374302955 Books

I wish that when I was in Middle School, I could have had friends like Lou Lou Bombay and Peacock Pearl. (Heck, since we're wishing here, I wish I could have lived in their warm, fascinating, mural-decorated, multicultural neighborhood, El Corazón!)

They're smart, kind, centered girls, and when a nasty prankster starts disturbing the peace of their happy hometown, they know what to do: find the culprit!

The malicious villain goes on to wreak more havoc upon the innocent. The girls start to investigate, fueled by plenty of vanilla buttercream cupcakes and LouLou's dad's whimsical nautical-themed meals like Landlubber Lasagna and Pirate Pizza. And in an eerie twist, elements representative of each crime start to show up in the murals on the walls of El Corazón. Who is painting these bizarre clues?
Could it be Jeremy, the suspiciously friendly new boy next door?

Readers will be kept guessing along with LouLou and Pea right up to the very exciting end, which takes place during a Day of the Dead celebration!

With hilarious grace notes (watch in particular for the "friendly-sea-lion" costume and the Sugar Mountain Sisters) and a diverse cast of characters including Spanish speakers, this book can't fail to charm and delight!

Special mention also should be made of the absolutely lovely, expressive and finely-tuned illustrations by Lesley Vamos. The integration of story and image is seamless and synergistic and captures the vibrant spirit of the book.

And if that weren't enough...at the end of the book there's a recipe, a flower crown "how-to", and a Spanish language glossary!!!

Sigh. Middle Grade bliss, achieved.

Lou Lou and Pea and the Mural Mystery Jill Diamond Lesley Vamos 9780374302955 Books Reviews

Such a cute story! Jill's writing is fantastic and Lou Lou and Pea are characters you want to be friends with!
This book was so much fun! I adored Lou Lou and Pea and their whole community. The mystery was perfectly pitched for young readers without being obvious (at all!) to readers of any age. And the murals! Such a cool element. Highly recommend.
Besides being and entertaining adventure of two young girls, the language in this book was clever, rich, full of alliteration and wonderful vocabulary. That's just the English. There are lots of Spanish remarks ( which are very understandable in the context of the story) which add to the fun. This book is hard to put down, even though I am not a ten-year-old girl.
I absolutely loved this book. Lou Lou and Pea are absolutely delightful and young readers will wish that they were actually real and that they could join them for PSPP (Post-School, Pre-Parents) time! The illustrations were so charming and worked so well with the text. I also enjoyed the activities at the end. This book is sure to be a hit with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders and I would recommend it highly! I am eager for Diamond's next book and looking forward to the further adventures of Lou Lou and Pea!
As an English teacher in a middle school, I probably read much more than my fair share of literature aimed at younger readers. More often than not, I go back to the old warhorses I cherished in my childhood, but, to be honest, some of those are starting to sound a little "quaint" to my students. So I'm always on the lookout for something new, and I'm so often disappointed. Then, along comes this little wonder-vibrant, fun, and mysterious, Lou Lou and Pea is just what I'm looking for. The characters are great, with Lou Lou and Pea's friendship being both believable, and endearing, and the mystery is clever (I didn't figure it out until the reveal). Best of all are the multicultural aspects, infusing the story with a respect and admiration for other cultural traditions. Additionally, the illustrations are a perfect pairing with the narrative. Finally, the frequent use of Spanish will be a major draw for my ELD students. Looking forward to a sequel!
I adored this middle grade novel! I read it twice because my five-year-old loved the pictures so much, he made me read it to him. And he wasn't satisfied with only reading the pages that were illustrated; he wanted to hear the entire beautiful mystery! This is a story that pulled on his imagination and made him cheer for the two main characters. Lou Lou Bombay and Peacock Pearl are wise and warm characters who leapt off the page. I seriously couldn't get enough of them as they dealt with the strange happenings in their close-knit neighborhood of El Corazon. The air is electric as Dia de los Muertos approaches and the neighborhood's murals begin to change. The paintings begin to include missing items, damaged items...exactly mirroring all of the strange behavior happening in El Corzaon. The girls set out to solve the mystery behind the changing murals and, along the way, discover that they can't make assumptions about who is (and isn't) the culprit. This is a beautifully written middle grade novel that made El Corazon leap off the page with its traditions, smells, flowers and colorful murals. I highly recommend this lovely debut!
Charming from beginning to end. Jill Diamond really knows how to tap into how young girls think. She has taken that gift and created two endearing protagonists, Lou Lou, an aspiring horticulturist with a problematic plant that mysteriously expires and Pea, short for Peacock, a budding artist with a knack for creating colorful costumes, and so much more. And a cast of supporting characters, each unique and colorful in their own right, all living in a neighborhood rich in eccentricity, cultural charm—AND MURALS. Many murals that are mysteriously changing, being redesigned. The two girls discover the changes. Are they clues to the strange events that have been plaguing the neighborhood? And who is leaving those painted clues—and why?
The story is so well woven to an ending that may surprise you and surely leave you satisfied—but yearning for more of Jill Diamond’s writing and Lou and Pea’s adventures.
