Inexpensive data storage and computational capabilities, together with the Internet, have ushered in the Information Age providing tremendous benefits that we are reaping with great success. However, there are negative side effects of easily available abundant information from diverse sources. Information has fostered a plethora of knowledge subjects that are not all equal. Vulnerabilities of the scientific method are getting exposed more often and thereby eroding science's credibility with general public. Our mental capacity has limitations in dealing with the quantity and variety of the information overload.

Far from being just a criticism, the book is an intellectual trip based on thought experiments, head-smacking experiences and curious observations. It lays out a structured framework that outlines how to assess and deal with the perils of information age – impotency of certain college majors and academic training, junk science behind statistical studies analyzing complexity, analysis-paralysis of data analytics, and increasing strain on our cognitive abilities.

Perils of Information Age eBook Pranav Prabhash

Perils of Information Age by Pranav Prabhash is an exhaustive look at the effects of so much information, so much news, all the time. Prabhash comments on various subcategories regarding learning in a technology driven world, the different ways of learning and which subjects are heavily promoted, as opposed to subjects that are less promoted within the classic school systems, not only in the United States but around the world. His contention is that math should be universally taught, regardless of academic prowess or ability. There is also discussion about the ability of manufacturers and marketing departments to disseminate the information they want you to have whether it is faulty or not. In other words, data of all kinds can be manipulated to say what you need it to say. After all, data is just numbers and statistics, and can be tweaked to favor any particular opinion one may have. A rather complex read, but full of information that takes an in depth look at learning, technology and the fast flow of information in today's society.

Perils of Information Age eBook Pranav Prabhash Reviews

I heard the idea of too much information attacking us from every direction all the time and what that does to our brain, the information overload. And it makes sense. This book partly deals with that, but the author also talks about knowledge, school system and some more topics related to our brain and learning.
The topic of the book and questions it deals with are very interesting to me and there is a lot of the stuff in this book that I had to wrap my head around. It really made me think, a lot. But, sometimes I wanted that the author went deeper and dedicated more space to certain ideas, I ended up exploring further from some other sources. That is not necessarily bad, the book actually isn't too long and I understand that you can't cram everything in it because it would have thousand pages. But, some things were fascinating and I wished there was more of it.
Other than that, it is well-written, it sparks curiosity and it is very relevant in the world we live in. Give it a try.
