The book tells the story of a large collection of photos found in France showing many Australian soldiers during the first wold war. A number of the soldiers have been identified, and the book includes many of their stories. These tell the brutal truth of life, disease and death in the trenches. Everything from VCs to VDs, courage and shell shock. Many of the men had fought in Gallipoli before moving on to the Somme. Some of the soldiers mentioned were lost in battle, there bodies only now being recovered from mass graves in France.
